Individual psychotherapy refers to the traditional type of therapy that typically takes place in a one-on-one setting between a therapist and a client. Individual therapy attempts to reduce internal distress, enhance relationships, and improve a client's performance in their job, school, home environment or other activities.

What happens in Individual Therapy?

Typically, when a client identifies a situation/concern that troubles them, therapists support them to gain insight, evaluating their options while gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and understanding what the underlying problems might be. The therapist helps the patient define the nature of the problem(s) in such a way that effective coping strategies can be generated. In doing so, the client comes to see that they can do something to improve their situation and that they are not alone.
