The pandemic has been hard on all of us. Most of us have been cooped up in our homes, with minimal human interaction and rather dull days. But those of us who have been lucky enough to avoid the COVID virus thus far often fail to understand the delicate position that the people dealing with the virus are in. Being restricted to a room, unable to reach anyone is an agonising position to be in. The loneliness and anxiety of the precarious situation can often cause a sense of disquiet and uneasiness. 

A large number of us are currently taking care of family or loved ones who are affected by the COVID virus, and we are concerned about their physical well being. We also have the additional responsibility to support them mentally through these unsettling times. Though we cannot come in direct contact with individuals dealing with COVID, here is a list of things we can do to ease their burden

Filling out prescriptions:

People dealing with COVID are in dire need of medication on a regular basis. Being unable to access medical stores, it is sometimes difficult to acquire such medication. One major way in which we can support our loved ones dealing with the virus is to make sure that they have a regular supply of the medication that they have been prescribed. Often, over the counter medication (such as medication for fever) helps to reduce the symptoms of the virus and provides minor relief. Individuals may also have underlying health issues that require them to take medication. We should strive to provide them with such essential medication. 

  1. Establish a Routine:

One of the things that COVID has done to a multitude of people is disrupt their sense of routine. People do not feel the motivation to perform everyday tasks and a sense of lethargy can arise. What we, as caretakers, can do is help them establish a routine. A regular list of tasks to perform will help the affected person establish a sense of routine. It will give them a sense of purpose during the difficult isolated period. Such simple, everyday activities are integral to keeping the mind active and prevent worrisome thoughts. 

Sending over meals:

People with COVID-19 are usually too weak to perform daily activities such as cooking for themselves. In such trying times, a warm, home-cooked meal can be a great source of comfort! A large number of people affected by the virus are currently living alone and do not have people to cook for them.  Sending over a meal to help them get through their day would play a small role in alleviating their stressful condition. A nutritious and filling meal goes a long way in assisting in the recovery of people affected by the virus.

Delivering groceries and other essentials:

Stocking up on essentials and groceries may not be possible for affected individuals by COVID-19. Their quarantine does not allow for future purchases. One way in which we can assist our loved ones is by performing the essential shopping on their behalf. Basic vegetables, milk, bread and other such everyday necessities can be bought and delivered to the houses of the affected individual. Items with long shelf-lives are recommended, as well as any specific items that the person requires. Offering help with specific tasks will make them more receptive to your assistance.

Maintaining contact:

Man is a social animal and people who are isolated after being affected by COVID sometimes feel a sense of being detached from the rest of society. This can often lead to deeper distress. In order to make them feel connected, pick up the phone and give them a call! A few comforting words and a kind ear to listen are sure to be greatly appreciated. Being there for a loved one when they are isolated is a step towards normalcy, and a sense of normalcy is very important in order to cope with a disease that takes a toll mentally and physically. Even a text message asking about their day, or inquiring about how they’re feeling will help people feel included and cared for. It is advisable to keep in contact more frequently than you normally would. 

Performing an Interactive Activity:

Staying cooped up in a room all day can be monotonous and uninteresting. Try and brighten up the day of your loved one by playing an interactive game with them over video conference! Taking their mind off the virus for an hour or two will surely do them good. There are a plethora of online multiplayer activities that are perfectly suited for such occasions. (Having trouble finding them? Here are a few suggestions: GoogleFeud, Kahoot, GeoGuesser, HigherOrLower). Such interactions keep the mind sharp and the heart happy! They also help the individual feel included in social activities and connected to friends.
