In this increasingly fast-paced society, our interactions with the elderly is unfortunately limited, thereby severely arresting our ability to understand their concerns. The 21st century senior citizens are sandwiched between two very different worlds, which is undeniably met with some mental health concerns. Also, as we approach the latter years of our lives, an inevitable thought about death and loss becomes enhanced. However, this can be experienced at any point during our lifespan, as well. 

When people grieve the loss of someone that they loved or was attached to, it is less about dealing with loss but more about coping with change. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and curate the mechanisms with which people can process death and embrace life. 

Through this workshop, learn about the various techniques that we can use as a mental health professionals in facilitating the process of dealing with loss, in addition to the some of the strategies that we can implement in developing a well-planned system of geriatric care, to improve the quality of life.

 About The Instructors

Nithya Rao, Co-founder and Psychologist at Heart It Out

Nithya J. Rao

As a rehabilitation psychologist, Nithya has specialised in addressing concerns related to grief and individual growth, among many others. She uses existential and gestalt approaches to therapy, and her expansive practice has allowed her to deeply explore the nature of emotional and physical trauma experienced by her clients, predominantly relating to death, loss and grief. As an avid reader and continuous learner, Nithya has curated very novel and effective techniques to navigate these concerns.

At this workshop, she is eager to share her knowledge and encourage reflective discussions about the ways in which people can process death and embrace life.

Sumithra Sridhar, Counseling Psychologist at Heart It Out

In her eclectic approach to therapy, Sumithra has gained critical insights into the variety of presenting problems among the geriatric population, and has abundant experience in curating beneficial interventions for them. While therapy in general can be a rollercoaster ride with its ebbs and flows, Sumithra makes it an easy and delicate process for our elderly, who may unaware about the significance of their mental health. 

Guided by her expertise, Sumithra is looking forward to impart her knowledge on certain innovative methods and techniques to enhance the quality of care for the geriatric population.
